Are Family Photos Worth It? When to Book, How Often & Why It Matters
ARE FAMILY PHOTOS WORTH IT? WHEN TO BOOK, HOW OFTEN, AND WHY IT MATTERS
If you’re a parent, you’ve probably thought some version of:
“I really want family photos… but when’s the right time? Will it be stressful? Is it even worth it?”
Let’s talk about it.
ARE PROFESSIONAL FAMILY PHOTOS REALLY WORTH IT?
They are — when they feel like you.
Not forced smiles. Not a “everyone look here” kind of session.
But photos that hold real connection, personality, and the way your family actually moves together.
Because these images don’t just live on your phone.
They become the ones you frame. The ones your kids grow up seeing.
The ones you come back to years later when you can’t remember the exact sound of their laugh, or how small their hands looked in yours.
The best family photos aren’t perfect.
They’re honest.
The way your toddler climbs into your lap mid-walk.
The tiny moments of chaos. The quiet ones too.
The look your partner gives your kids when they’re not trying to “be on.”
That’s what I’m photographing.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU BOOK FAMILY PHOTOS?
There’s no one right answer — but for most families, once a year feels like the sweet spot.
It’s just enough to document how quickly things change without feeling like “another thing to keep up with.”
Some families choose:
Fall photos for holiday cards
A spring session when everything feels fresh again
A golden hour summer beach session
An in-home session when life is slower (or there’s a new baby)
And honestly?
If it’s been a while since you’ve had a photo with you in it… that’s a good enough reason.
WHAT’S THE BEST AGE FOR FAMILY PHOTOS?
The short answer: now.
Every season has something worth remembering.
Newborn stage — the softness, the newness, the tiny details
6–12 months — sitting up, bright-eyed curiosity, the first real giggles
Toddlerhood — movement, personality, full-body snuggles (and strong opinions)
Early childhood — independence, imagination, sibling connection
There’s no perfect age — just the season you’re in.
And you don’t need your kids to be “good for the camera.”
I’ll guide you gently, keep things light, and let the session unfold naturally.
HOW LONG DOES A FAMILY SESSION TAKE?
Most of my family sessions are around 90 minutes.
That gives you time to settle in, warm up, and stop feeling like you need to “perform” right away.
We move at your kids’ pace, pause when needed, and keep things relaxed.
And if we’re shooting at your home or somewhere familiar? Even better.
Kids open up faster when they feel safe — and that’s when the real moments happen.
WHAT MAKES A SESSION FEEL LIKE YOU?
This is the part that matters most.
My sessions are designed to feel relaxed, editorial, and true to your family — not a Pinterest version of it.
That means:
no stiff posing
no pressure to “get it right”
no perfectly coordinated outfits required
Instead, I’ll guide you into good light, give you simple prompts, and make space for your kids to just be themselves.
The goal isn’t perfection.
It’s connection — photographed with care.
